Serah Chavangi / Education

serahchavangi.jpgI was born and grew up in Nairobi, Kenya. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Catholic University of Eastern Africa (2000). While in college I also occasionally worked on projects with a NGO called Women in Development and Environment Network (WIDEN); an organization my mother worked with. After graduating from college I worked as a Mathematics Lecturer in Kenya for two years then moved to the United States in 2002 for graduate school. I recently graduated from grad school where I attained a Dual Degree (Masters of Arts in Management and Masters of Arts in Non Profit Management) from Hamline University (2007). I have worked with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage as a Mortgage Analyst, Accenture HR Services as an Employee Relations Coordinator and am now at the YMCA as a Human Resources Generalist. I developed my interest in the non profit sector through observing the work that my mother did. She worked with a number of Non Governmental Organizations in Kenya where she mainly worked with women in the rural areas. The women were trained on ways to conserve energy, better farming methods, and trained on various skills in the aim of improving the quality of life in their homesteads. Observing the changes that took place in the lives of the women and their families showed me that everyone has the potential to influence the lives of others positively. All you need to do is you take the time to understand the needs of those who are less fortunate and work with them to come up with ways to help them and in turn they will be in a position to help others. One of the things I would like to accomplish with the help of my parents, who are greatly familiar with the need of the people in rural Kenya, is to set up a non profit organization in Western Kenya that works with women and children. One of the goals for this organization would be to help eradicate poverty in the rural areas of Kenya by teaching women skills that will enable them to generate additional income for their families hence improving the quality of their lives.
